As opposed to a long winded coffee order being placed in front of you in line you may shortly hear, “I’ll have a tall Corona.” Starbucks has already been serving alcohol in select Oregon and Washington locations. The effort was put into action in order to boost evening sales, as 70% of Starbucks’ business occurs before 2 p.m.

Starbucks announced it looks to add alcohol-serving cafes in southern California, Chicago, and Atlanta. Starbucks has not yet announced which locations will be serving alcohol, but it is expected the four to six cafe’s in the Atlanta area will be serving alcohol with-in the year. Starbucks doesn’t plan to eventually serve alcohol in all of their stores, only a select few.

The Seattle based Starbucks has seen great success from the added menu item, after introducing beer and wine in 2010.

The Starbucks brand has established strong recognition and some people fear they are acting dangerously in regards to changing peoples perceptions or their identity. They must remain a coffee shop that serves alcohol and not walk the line of a bar that also sells coffee. They have proved worriers wrong before after the success of their criticized drive-thru.
